Thief crawls into store, steals magazines
(UPI) -- A British shopkeeper shared video of a bizarre theft where a man crawled into the store on all fours and grabbed magazines meant for young girls. Sunny Patel, owner of the Best-One store in the Knowle district of Bristol, England, posted CCTV videos to Facebook showing different angles of the Friday incident at the store.
The videos show the man reaching in through the automatic doors to grab a package of toilet paper and place it in front of the door to prevent it from closing.
The man then gets down on his hands and knees, crawls a few feet into the store, grabs a handful of magazines, and flees.
Patel said the magazines were designed for young girls and featured popular cartoon character Peppa Pig.
The video shows the man returns moments later and repeats the same steps to take more magazines.
The man comes back a third time after scant minutes, but this time he is greeted inside the store by an employee.
The employee walks up to the crawling man, who freezes in place as if trying not to be noticed by the worker, who grabs the package of toilet paper from the doorway and blocks the man's attempts to grab another handful of magazines.
"All in all I want my magazines back!" Patel wrote.
He said the man got away with about $31 worth of magazines.
"I know this isn't a massive amount but it's purely down to principles. This is to send a message out loud and clear to locals that we will not tolerate this. An example has to be made," Patel told the Bristol Post.
Police are investigating the incident.
Keep your teen athlete fueled
(BPT) - High school can be intense, but being a student athlete can intensify expectations.
As the start of spring sports approaches, the stakes are even higher for your student to maintain the success they had first semester. There are practices, matches and conference finals that have to fit in with exams and semester-long projects. Being a standout in the classroom and on the field requires expert-level planning and execution.
That's where parents play a huge role in helping their teen athletes keep it all in balance. Here are four easy tips to help you ensure that your teen is ready for a great season, on and off the field.
Food: Allison Maurer - a sports dietitian and Gatorade consultant who has worked with high school and collegiate athletes - says, "The important thing to remember is that food is fuel. It gives athletes the energy they need to perform and also helps them recover. When planning your athletes' meals, look for whole food sources that provide high-quality fats, lean proteins and complex carbohydrates. Talk to your athlete about his or her fuel strategy before, during and after practices and games, and offer support by providing healthy, energy rich snacks."
Hydration: When exercising hard, the body cools itself through sweat. If body mass is reduced by about 2 percent, which would be 3 pounds of water weight loss in a 150-pound athlete, it can negatively affect performance, according to the National Athletic Trainers' Association's (NATA) Position Statement on Fluid Replacement for Athletes.
"Athletes lose more than water in sweat, so it's important that they take their hydration seriously since it can impact performance," Maurer says. Rest: Although teens may seem to bounce back easily from a night with too little rest, the truth is that good sleep helps both learning and athletic performance. In addition, teens with earlier bedtimes had better grades than those who stayed up later and slept less, according to a study of 3,000 subjects cited by the National Sleep Foundation.
Talk about these benefits with your athlete, and encourage them to go to bed and rise at the same time each day. Also, the glowing light of electronic devices can also interfere with sleep. So, help your teen come up with a strategy to power down an hour or so before bedtime in order to prepare their minds for a night of restorative sleep.
Planning: Schedules have a way of colliding, and this especially happens when a huge test and a game are scheduled for the same day. Each week, sit down with your student athlete and walk through that week's schedule. Look at practices, games, homework assignments and tests, and create a calendar. That way, if a midterm and a game take place on the same day, he or she can plan accordingly. This will help avoid a late-night, stress-filled cram session that will steal from their performance in the classroom and on the field.
Life as a student athlete means keeping everything in balance. By focusing on the body - from nutrition to time management - athletes can focus on giving their best performance this upcoming season.
What to do when your home feels like a cave
(BPT) - A house with ample windows can win your heart with silent promises of sun-drenched rooms and warm breezes wafting through open windows. The truth, however, is that even a home with windows galore can have rooms that feel dark and cave like.
Some of the most-loved aspects of modern design - open, expansive floor plans, wood flooring in darker tones, walls of windows - may leave portions of a room dazzled with sun and other parts dim and poorly lit. For example, a room with a wall full of picture windows will often lack windows on other walls. Near the windows, you'll get plenty of sunlight and some glare, but the natural light might not make it to the far corners of the room - especially if it's a large space like a great room.
What's more, interior spaces like powder rooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms and closets often have no windows at all, making them feel small and dark. No one wants rooms that look like caves - not even if your house has an actual "man cave" or "woman cave" in it!
Fortunately, a few smart decorating tricks and some budget-friendly, high-impact enhancements can help brighten rooms and relieve that cavelike feeling.
Of course, the sure-fire way to get more light into a room is to add more windows, but that's not always a practical or cost-effective solution. Instead, look for alternative ways to bring more sunlight into a room.
Daylighting systems can bring sunlight from a rooftop down into a room, allowing natural light to illuminate dark spaces where light from windows can't reach. Maximizing the amount of light that comes in through the windows you do have is easy. Keep curtains light and airy, and use blinds or shades to control the amount of light coming from the window. Install curtain rods 2 feet wider than windows so that when curtains or drapes are open, they don't block any of the window or the light coming through it.
You can also "dress" walls to mimic the look of windows. For example, if you have a windowless powder room, adding a transom above the door can help the room feel bigger while borrowing light from adjacent rooms. The tactic of borrowing light can also work if you're able to put a pass through between a closed off room and an adjacent one that has windows.
Finally, don't overlook the power of decor in making a room feel bright and welcoming. Light-hued walls of white, cream or pale yellow or blue not only make a room feel bigger, they evoke the visual qualities of natural light.
Large windowless rooms, like a basement play room, can benefit from large framed art. Select scenes that mimic the view you might get from a picture window, such as a seascape, mountain scene or city skyline.
Filtered overhead light can also create the effect of a natural light source. For example, drape light-colored, opaque fabric above a bed, so that the cloth conceals the overhead light fixture. As the artificial light shines through the fabric, it will imitate the diffused look of natural light.
Eastburg Community Alliance Wants Performers
Eastburg Community Alliance is looking for entertainers to display their talents at the depot during the months of June, July, August and September. They specifically are looking for local artists to volunteer to perform during Music on Mondays at Dansbury Depot. Grey Towers Historic Site Applications are being accepted for summer internships at Grey Towers National Historic Site, Milford, PA. College students who are interested in parks and recreation, history,gardening and landscape architecture and forestry are encouraged to apply. Students can earn from $85 per week subsisten ce allowance to $2,500 for the 12-week season,depending on which internship they qualify for. Housing on the historic estate and uniforms may be provided.
Education/Interpretation/Visitor Services:Multiple 12-week internships are available for students to deliver interpretive mansion tours and education programs and hone their visitor services skills. Deadline to apply is March 1 for May - August internship. Gardening/Horticulture: Two opportunities are available for May - August; each provides avaluable, practical experience for a motivated undergraduate college student who wants a hands-on experience to challenge and broaden the student’s knowledge of practical applications of horticultural theory learned in the classroom.
