100-year-old woman says wine keeps her going
BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) – Florence Bearse celebrated her 100th birthday in Bangor Thursday.
Known for her no-nonsense attitude and sense of humor at the Westgate Center for Rehabilitation, Florence did not shy away from sharing her secret: wine.
“I like my wine. Don't take it away from me,” she said.
The event was complete with all the fixings, including birthday cake, balloons and gifts.
Bearse said she ran a restaurant in Lagrange where she dedicated her life to serving others. "The people have taken me I think. They understand me. That I'm crazy,” Bearse joked.
Originally from Massachusetts, she said it did not take long to find the beauty of Maine.
"Maine is beautiful. I tell everybody, ‘You want a trip? Go to Maine,’” she said.
Florence spent much of her time joking around during the party, making faces and laughing.
She even had some advice for those looking to make it as far as she has:
"Don't take any bologna,” Bearse said.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - July 14
French revolutionaries storm Bastille - 1789
Parisian revolutionaries and mutinous troops storm and dismantle the Bastille, a royal fortress and prison that had come to symbolize the tyranny of the Bourbon monarchs. This dramatic action signaled the beginning of the French Revolution, a decade of political turmoil and terror in which King Louis XVI was overthrown and tens of thousands of people, including the king and his wife Marie-Antoinette, were executed.
By the summer of 1789, France was moving quickly toward revolution. Bernard-René Jordan de Launay, the military governor of the Bastille, feared that his fortress would be a target for the revolutionaries and so requested reinforcements. On July 12, royal authorities transferred 250 barrels of gunpowder to the Bastille, and Launay brought his men into the massive fortress and raised its two drawbridges.
At dawn on July 14, a great crowd armed with muskets, swords, and various makeshift weapons began to gather around the Bastille. Launay’s men were able to hold the mob back, but as more and more Parisians were converging on the Bastille, Launay raised a white flag of surrender over the fortress. Launay and his men were taken into custody, the Bastille’s gunpowder and cannons were seized, and the seven prisoners were freed. Upon arriving at the Hotel de Ville, where Launay was to be arrested and tried by a revolutionary council, he was instead pulled away by a mob and murdered.
The capture of the Bastille symbolized the end of the ancien regime and provided the French revolutionary cause with an irresistible momentum. In 1792, the monarchy was abolished and Louis and his wife Marie-Antoinette were sent to the guillotine for treason in 1793.

Man transports single can of beer on flight as checked luggage
(UPI) -- An Australian man shared the saga of a single loose can of beer that he successfully transported as checked luggage on a domestic flight.
Dean Stinson said he was flying from Melbourne to Perth and decided to have the can of Emu Export lager transported as checked luggage to see if it would survive the Qantas flight.
"One of my mates works at the airport and he and I were wondering what I could check as luggage and get away with -- a single deodorant can was another idea -- but the export can was way more iconic so I went with that," Stinson told website Unilad. "Honestly the thought of a single can of export making its way down the baggage carousel was too good to pass up so I thought I'd give it a whirl."
Chanelle Zubrinich, a friend of Stinson, posted a short Facebook video of the can wrapped in a luggage tag as it traveled down the belt to join the checked bags.
"Greatest moment of my life," Zubrinich captioned the video.
A video posted by Stinson shows the can waiting for him at the luggage carousel after he got off his plane.
"I was right up the back end of the plane, so I rocked up to the baggage carousel late," he said. "There was no luggage out yet but everyone was milling around and had their phones out so I was pretty sure I knew what was going on."
"Sure enough there she was, alone on the carousel proudly making her way around," Stinson said.
Stinson posted a photo of the can on Facebook after its successful journey.
"Not all emus are flightless," he joked.
